About the Department

Established in 2008, the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Rajalakshmi Institute of Technology has a sanctioned intake of 120 students. Since its inception, the department has pursued excellence in teaching, technical training, design, development, research, and extension activities. Supported by qualified and dedicated faculty members, skilled technicians, and well-equipped facilities, the department prepares students for careers in engineering, industry, management, and administration. Its graduates have earned recognition across diverse professional fields, contributing to the institution’s reputation.

The department houses seven well-equipped laboratories and two Centers: the Center for Smart Manufacturing (CSM) and the Center for Electric Vehicle and Energy (CEVE). These facilities support practical learning, experimentation, and research and development, enabling students to connect engineering principles with real-world applications.

The curriculum combines a strong foundation in mechanical engineering with exposure to contemporary industrial practices. Through internships and engagement with start-ups, students gain experience in addressing industrial challenges across several areas:

  • Computer-Aided Design and Manufacturing (CAD/CAM): 3D modelling, workspace simulation, and analysis of automotive components.
  • Smart Manufacturing: Applications involving CNC plasma cutting machines, CNC wood routers, vision-based CNC milling machines, and CNC lathes.
  • Additive Manufacturing: 3D printing and related design and development activities.
  • Electric Vehicles: Design and development of electric mobility solutions, including e-cycles, e-scooters, and electric cars.

The department continues to strengthen its research capabilities through advanced facilities and Centres of Excellence, with a focus on emerging technologies in additive manufacturing, electric mobility, and advanced materials. It also undertakes research projects supported by external funding agencies.

Industry collaboration is an integral part of the department’s academic and professional development activities. Memoranda of Understanding with industries support technical training and engagement, complemented by seminars, presentations, and guest lectures delivered by industry experts, distinguished professionals, and representatives of international universities. These interactions broaden students’ technical perspectives and enhance their preparedness for professional practice.

The department’s placement activities connect students with opportunities in the automotive, manufacturing, and design sectors through national and multinational organisations. Its alumni hold positions in reputed organisations in India and abroad, reflecting the department’s contribution to the professional development of its graduates.
